Millennials – the segment of the population born in the 1980s and ’90s – are more or less all grown up now. They’re finishing college, entering the work force, renting and purchasing homes, and entering committed relationships.

When they have a legal problem, where are they going to turn?

Online Research

Research is the first port of call. Virtually 100% of millennials are internet users (and approximately 19% of them are smartphone-only internet users), and they do their research online.

You have to ensure that when a millennial is researching your law firm that you are making yourself available instantly across all platforms. Social Media

According to Google 90% of millennials go online every day. They have never known a world without technology and they live and breathe social media.

If your firm is not on social media then it might as well not exist in the eyes of millennials. If you don’t have accounts set up on the main social media platforms, this is something that you need to address.


Millennials are used to being able to obtain everything online. Legal services are no different – they will expect those services to be available online and will consider it inconvenient to have to physically attend an office to tell you about their problem and to get your advice.

Those firms that are able to deliver useful legal services online will be the firms that get first refusal on millennial business.

You don’t have to provide the entire service online, but you do need to provide something tangible that will secure an invested commitment to your firm.

What to do now?

In summary, you need to:

  1. Ensure that your website is up-to-date and that it is optimised for viewing on a mobile device;
  2. Create accounts on the main social media platforms and link these back to your website;
  3. Post regularly on your social media accounts (this can be automated if necessary);
  4. Add value to your website offering by providing a way for prospective clients to get instant advice about the problem they face.
